Why Hawaii Spent a Lot of Money for to Combat Smoking?

Countries which started the fight against smoking spent a lot of money on stop smoking campaigns. For example, Hawaii has spent almost $40 million for to combat tobacco use statewide since 2000.

Researchers said that $26 million was spent on state, community and cessation interventions involving support and public policy activities and controlling the Hawaii Tobacco Quitline.
The aim of this report is to highlights the state’s successes in influencing the new law and creating public service campaigns over the past decade intended at getting Hawaii citizens to quit smoking.
The more remarkable successes was attended because of an anti-smoking law in 2006, which raised cigarette taxes from $1 a pack in 2000 to $2.80 in 2009 and raising fines and penalties for illicit sales of smoking products to children.

However, smoking and tobacco use continues to be the single and greatest cause of preventable incidence and mortality in Hawaii resulting in more than 1,200 deaths every year at a cost of $643 million per year in direct medical outlays and in lost productivity.

This money was spent for to support tobacco prevention and control including reducing smoking and tobacco use especially among youth and adults through education, enforcement activities, and controlling and preventing chronic diseases where tobacco is a dangerous factor.

For example, the trust fund used to receive as much as $12.8 million a year. But this sum was reduced. So, now it stands at about $3 million, according to the Hawaii Community Foundation.
Since its beginning, the fund brought about almost $91 million in revenue from its annual destination, investment interest and dividends.
