New Anti-Tobacco Movements in South CarolinaIn the past smoking was in vogue but today smoking is consider one of the most harmful product. That’s why almost all countries started the fight against smoking cigarettes and even against secondhand smoke. For example, South Carolina is one of 14 states which decided to create legislations that will protect its territory from tobacco-caused diseases. All these states were based on four items: tobacco prevention and control programs, cessation treatments, state cigarette taxes and strong smoke-free air laws. A recent investigation found that South Carolina, along with Alabama, Kentucky, West Virginia, Virginia and Missouri, received the lowest scores possible on all these points. American Lung Association showed that in 2009 only three states in the union passed strong smoke-free air legislations: Michigan, South Dakota and Wisconsin. But the year before, only two states met the challenge. That’s mean that more and more states passed to stronger anti-tobacco legislations. A lot of evidences showed also that states with strong smoke-free air laws have fewer adult smokers among their inhabitants. Before the new anti-tobacco legislations to be implemented, they are firstly discussed by council members who have power to decide to prohibit smoking in such places as restaurants, bars, educational and health care facilities and common areas of apartment buildings or not. Last year, wasn’t the first time when the proposal of a new smoking ban was discussed before city council. For example in December 2005, a group of residents came before the body during a council work meeting to discuss a new smoking ban, Florence City Manager David Williams explained. Researchers found that South Carolina has the lowest cigarette sales tax in the nation at 7 cents, but some legislators wanted to change that 2009. They planed to raise the tax by 50 cents, but it didn’t happen yet. Today tobacco use and second-hand smoke has been joined to several health problems, including lung cancer and emphysema. |
