Researchers in Heidelberg, Koblenz, Germany say that present data do not support the hypothesis that smokers are at risk. The researchers claimed that smoking is a major risk factor for periodontal disease. However, there was limited information about how tobacco affected smokers with minimal gingival destruction. The researchers made four assessments over six months of clinical periodontal conditions to estimate the development of periodontal recession. 61 healthy volunteers aged 19-30 years agreed to be under observation. 31person did not smoke and 30 smoked at least 20 cigarettes a day. In the beginning, approximately half of both groups had unhealthy gums at one or more sites. There was severe gum recession of more than 2 mm in more than 3 times as many non-smokers (23 %) as among people who smoke (7 %). Further gum problems developed during the study.
